The general furniture layout and size of our sumptuous en-suite rooms was arrived at after going
through some 600 guest comments as to what they would
like and enjoy.
The Queen
Elizabeth, The Double
Delight, The Ecstasy
Rose Suite and The Peace
Suite are separate from the main building, measuring
6.5m x 5.5m plus bathroom 3m x 2.5m. The Drostdy
Room is rather special in that it is the only
guest room within the original Victorian cottage.
All rooms are en-suite with separate
shower and bath. The Ecstasy Suite features a luxurious
walk-in double shower with a double vanity and bath
for two while the Drostdy Room, has a large walk-in
shower only.

The four separate spacious, deluxe, air conditioned
suites open directly onto a quiet large, private garden
where we have a large number of rose bushes, and abundant
birdlife.
Relax under the vine-covered pergola with a glass
of wine, or recline in your deckchair on the sunny
well-manicured lawn.
The grape-vines on the pergola outside the Queen
Elizabeth, Double Delight and Ecstasy Rose suites are the
ornamental type which ensures that during the heat
of summer the rooms are well-shaded, but during the
cold months the sun has free access to the rooms.
We chose ornamental grapes to avoid the danger of
wasps being attracted to the fruit.
What you can expect in your suite...
All our suites have three different types of coffees,
several different types of teas, and fresh milk is
always available in the refrigerator.
Our internationally
acclaimed shortbread is renewed daily, as is the locally-grown
fruit, the port, and the muscadel (muscadel is the
sweet wine loved by early settlers).
All these items are there for your enjoyment at no
charge.
The contents of the fridge are there to be enjoyed
at no extra cost if consumed on the premises.
There is an extensive range of local Aloe Ferox toiletries
in the bathrooms, to be enjoyed.
Electric blankets are available at all times. However,
we only put these on the beds during the colder months.
The air conditioner is set for maximum coolness at
20C.
All rooms now receive free Wi-Fi thanks to our recently amplified broadband antenna.
All our rooms now include flat screen televisions with a satellite movie channel.
Smokers: all our rooms and indoor areas are "non-smoking"
but you may smoke outdoors.
The Queen Elizabeth Suite
Named after the pink Queen Elizabeth Rose, the
Queen Elizabeth Suite is a deluxe, air conditioned suite
that opens directly onto our quiet large, private garden
where we have a large number of rose bushes, and abundant
birdlife.
The ceilings of this suite are of Spanish reed and
are tied in the traditional manner. The beams are
local Pine.
The king-size bed was made by the first owner of
The Hideaway Adin Greaves from Canary Pine to his
own design, as are the side tables and lamps. The
mattress was custom made for us by the School for
the Blind in Worcester.
The sleeper couch (day bed) is another one of Adin
Greaves' carpentry originals and is made from indigenous
woods; namely Black Ironwood, Stinkwood, Yellowwood
and Leadwood. To convert the couch into a bed, the
backrest is simply lifted out.
The cupboard and dressing table are early 20th Century
oak pieces that for many years were resident in Silverhurst,
Constantia, and were inherited by Adin Greaves from
his mother. On being restored they were found to have
been painted green on top of white on top of a dark
stain.
The windows are made from Blackwood in the traditional
Victorian style.
The room is en-suite with a bath and walk-in shower
(see
picture ).
The Double Delight Suite
Named after the deep pink and cream Double Delight Rose, the Double Delight
Suite is a deluxe, air conditioned suite with en-suite
bathroom that opens directly onto our quiet large, private
garden where we have a large number of rose bushes,
and abundant birdlife.
The ceilings of this suite are of Spanish reed and
are tied in the traditional manner. The beams are
local Pine.
The queen-size bed is made from Yellowwood and Kiaat
to Adin's design, as are the side tables which are
made from Canary Pine and Cypress.
One of the lamps is Yellowwood and the other Hard
Pear.
The mattress is the latest Sealy Posturepedic
Plus which, we think, you will find a superb
mattress.
The coffee table and side tables are made from Tambuti,
a wood that grows north of Pretoria. This is an exceptionally
hard and heavy wood giving off a slightly astringent
aroma. African tradition believes that by keeping
a piece of this wood in your room, all flu's, mosquitoes,
etc., etc., including tokoloshes (gremlins), will
be kept away.
The chairs are genuine leather made by Coricraft
of Cape Town.
The Yellowwood kist at the foot of the bed was made
by Adin Greaves from old beams extracted from the
first building erected at Rhodes University in Grahamstown.
The cupboard and dressing table are made from Kiaat,
the top of the dressing table being Black Ironwood
and Yellowwood.
The windows are made from Blackwood in the traditional
Victorian style.
The Double Delight is en-suite with a walk-in shower
as well as bath (see
picture ).
The Ecstasy Rose Suite
Our latest addition, and equivalent of a Honeymoon
suite, the beautifully appointed Ecstasy Rose Suite is named
after the Ecstasy rose which grows abundantly in the
gardens outside the room.
With fantastic
mountain views, featuring a Queen Size leather Sleigh
bed with hand crafted side tables made from Rose Wood.
The dresser and wardrobe are original stinkwood antiques.
A large luxurious bathroom with double bath, double
vanity and double walk-in shower (see
picture ).
The Peace Suite
Named after the well-known Peace Rose, the Peace Suite is a deluxe, air
conditioned en-suite room that opens directly onto our
quiet large, private garden where we have a large number
of rose bushes, and abundant birdlife.
The two single beds and dressing table are made from
old Stinkwood and were manufactured in Pretoria at
the turn of the 19 th Century.
The coffee table was made early in the 19th Century
for the Cloetes of Cape Town and is in fact made from
Stinkwood that was cut in the mountains behind Swellendam.
The chairs are genuine leather and made by Coricraft
of Cape Town.
The en-suite bathroom includes a bath and walk-in
shower (see
picture ).
The Drostdy Room
The only guest room within the original Victorian cottage, the Drostdy room enjoys the benefit of the charming stoep (verandah) leading to the front garden, where one can relax and enjoy the mountain view, and watch the sunbirds which are very active in the flowering shrubs nearby the verandah.
Featuring a queen-sized bed with bedside tables made
from yellowwood and the charming central light fitting
is a Victorian antique.
The en-suite bathroom includes a large shower.
